When you think Artificial Intelligence (AI), you might think Hollywood portrayals from movies like iRobot or Stephen Spielberg’s film AI.  However, the world of AI is much more than robots and talking machines. It’s likely that every day you’re using AI in one way or another, without even actively noticing it.  What are some products and activities that you use every day, that give you a full AI experience?

Smartphones/Smart Assistants

It’s safe to say that most of the population likely uses some sort of smartphone.  While smartphone technology has significantly evolved since the release of the first iPhone or Android, today, using your smartphone essentially means you are interacting with AI constantly.  Take the most obvious form of AI in the smartphone world, your phones smart assistant–Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant, etc.  These smart assistants are programmed in your phone to assist you with instantaneously finding information or answers to questions, setting reminders and calendar management, and communicating with others.  AI is even used in your phone’s image technology. Features such as portrait mode use AI to capture sharp, high-quality images with small but powerful lenses.

Social Media & Streaming Services

Social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, and streaming services, such as Netflix or Spotify, are easily some of the most common forms of AI we use every day.  Social media platforms continually use AI in your timeline, notifications, and a friend or page follow suggestions. AI software will analyze your past information, interactions, or web searches and tailor what comes up in your feed based on the obtained information.  Streaming services are similar. For a small monthly subscription, users can access a seemingly unlimited amount of movies, TV shows, music, podcasts, etc.; and based off of past searches and streams, AI technology will customize different playlists and recommendations based on each user’s specific interests.

Navigation & Travel

Travel and navigation apps, such as Google or Apple Maps, Uber, or Lyft, use AI technology consistently.  Whether it’s planning your day of travel or daily commute using thousands of data points for the quickest and most accurate route, or instantly finding you a licensed Uber or Lyft driver within a few short miles of your current location, AI is part of the foundation that gets you from point A to point B.  If you’re on a long drive where navigation is required, and your Apple Maps app detects an accident ahead, AI technology will analyze data of surrounding areas to reroute you in a more convenient way.
